NASCAR fans... just like IndyCar fans

According to Sports Media Watch, NASCAR just concluded its worst-rated season on FOX... again.

Please note the comments section following the SMW story.

What are NASCAR fans doing? They're blaming the television partner!

Granted, IndyCar would love to have NASCAR's problems right about now. Let's hope that Randy Bernard and ICONIC figure out a way to take advantage when NASCAR Cup sponsorship valuations are adjusted downward.

I have discussed that very proposition here.

  1. Three hardcore fans blaming the broadcaster. Which proves what, exactly?

  2. The fact is that virtually every sports event broadcast is down these days - the exception being the first game of the NBA finals, which features Boston and LA Lakers. Baseball, golf, auto racing and the others are off, on Fox, Versus and other networks.

  3. In this economy who can afford anything? People are simply hunkering down, cutting their costs and riding out the storm. Only a change in Washington will bring relief, and when jobs do return spending and television habits will be altered for good. All sports are going to pay a price. NASCAR is no different. They may have more staying power than Indy Car. But market retractions are all part of life. This one happens to be the worst one since the Great Depression. And frankly, we may have a long way to go before it is over.Only time will tell.

  4. Correct Oldwrench.

The poor economy will effect the lower rung sports the most. It is effecting all sports. But the really popular ones (NFL, MLB, NASCAR, PGA Golf) can survive it and weather the storm. They may dip in attendance and ratings, but they had a big cushion to begin with. They may lose some sponsors, but they all had a ton to begin with.

Its the less popular sports (which Indy Car is in) that didn't have many fans watching to begin with and don't have many fans period and didn't have many sponsors, that will be hurt the most. For those companies that are doing well and still want to sponsor sporting events/sports, are still going to be drawn to the sports that are popular and have fans. The little money out there will go to the entities that produce the most ROI.

NASCAR, despite slightly lower ratings and more empty seats, is still very good value (they still get regular 4.0 TV ratings every week). Indy Car, would love to just see a 1.0 rating again anywhere besides Indy.

This is not a tough decision, is it?

  5. NASCAR is a "very good value" for sponsors? Have you seen what it costs to run a mid-pack cab these days?

That sport was set up for a major contraction, and the economy was just the trigger.

  6. Yes, NASCAR Cup and Nationwide are MUCH better values then Indy Car.

Its about eyeballs. And both Cup and Nationwide have millions more then Indy Car.

Its way too expensive to sponsor a Indy Car.
