Impressions from the 2010 Indianapolis 500

I awoke from a lengthy slumber this afternoon after driving 1,165.4 miles round-trip so that I could watch my 33rd consecutive Indianapolis 500 Mile Race in person. Once again, it was worth it.

I have long believed that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the world's premier managers of facilities and large-scale sporting events. This, too, was confirmed with the 94th running of the Memorial Day Classic.

Congratulations to Mari Hulman George, the IMS Board of Directors, and IMS CEO Jeff Belskus and his entire team. Whatever you might think of him - and I like him, by the way - Tony George also deserves credit. The facility has never looked better. Yes, he spent a lot of money, but he also did an outstanding job upgrading and maintaining the Speedway.

Impressions

The race was good but not great. In my opinion, it was more interesting than the 2009 version. The following facts, observations and opinions are listed in no particular order. They represent something of a data dump from my very tired cerebellum.

Your mileage may vary. In fact, I encourage you to submit your impressions in the comments section below.

  • The right driver won. Yes, Dario Franchitti might have benefited from the final yellow, but that is only because he was put in a precarious position by the previous yellow. Dario had the field covered all day long - no small task in contemporary IndyCar racing. Franchitti's win in 2007 might have been a fluke. This one most certainly was not.
  • Davey Hamilton is probably right. Tomas Scheckter is likely an idiot and a knucklehead. However, because I am a fan and not a driver, I love to watch Scheckter drive. The man drives with reckless abandon from the drop of the green flag. He is an old-style charger. His lack of patience has probably cost him more than a few potential victories, but he is worth the price of admission.
  • Speaking of admission prices, I bought a $90 ticket in E Stand (1st turn apex) for $60. I had plenty of wiggle room because the two seats next to me were unoccupied. While I appreciated the unanticipated level of comfort, I think it is safe to say that the series has much work to do with regards to increasing demand for the racing product.
  • The Moment of Silence in honor of those who lost their lives so that we might live free is always one of my favorite parts of the opening ceremonies. Unfortunately, I did not know when it occurred due to inexcusable technical problems. I also missed the first stanza of Taps, another one of my favorites, for the same reason. And I really felt sorry for Jewel, who reportedly had worked very hard in preparation for singing the National Anthem, who had to suffer through a malfunctioning microphone. I can attest that there is no worse feeling. Kudos to her for bravely sticking it out.
  • The transition to the recorded video segment in honor of Memorial Day does not work. It's an unnecessary road block in an otherwise moving ceremony. Please get rid of it. The speeches, songs and invocation have much more impact and should not be interrupted once they begin.
  • Track announcer Dave Calabro unintentionally caused multiple additional moments of silence at Sunday's race. These occurred during driver introductions, when he uttered the names Sebastian Saavedra, Takuma Sato, Mario Romancini, Bertrand Baguette, E.J. Viso, Hideki Mutoh and too many others.
  • Which team has the most fans? From the looks of the apparel at the race, it's clearly Andretti Autosport. Tony Kanaan is a Brazilian who has a very American story, and it shows. He has clearly established a fan base. Danica has fans, albeit fewer than she had when the month began. Still, it is clear that young ladies identify with her. Marco Andretti gear seemed to adorn lots of teenage boys and young men, many of whom undoubtedly would like to party with Marco and his entourage of attractive young women. I also noticed a lot of Ryan Hunter-Reay 37 IZOD gear, which was good to see. John Andretti received one of the loudest ovations in driver introductions. There is value in having LOCAL favorites in competition. This is true not only at Indy but also at every race in the series.
  • IZOD's sponsorship activation efforts were very good. The sponsor is definitely getting its money's worth. Given the product that it offers to fans, the series appears to be getting its money's worth, as well.
  • There are rumors of a possible team owners' revolt if Delta Wing is not selected to be the next generation of Indy car. Some believe that the fix is in for Dallara and that the ICONIC machinations are just for show. In my view, this is the Big Story of the summer in IndyCar.
  • Randy Bernard has made friends and earned respect for his willingness to listen and return phone calls. That might sound like small potatoes, but it should not be underestimated.
  • If Brian Barnhart wants Dallara or another manufacturer and the team owners want Delta Wing, then Randy Bernard is about to be significantly tested for the first time in his tenure. Good luck, Randy.
  • The existential question is making the rounds of the IRL administrative offices, the garage area and the media room. Specifically, people are asking one another, "Why does the IRL exist? What is it? What is its purpose? Is it a sanctioning body? Is it a marketing company? Is it (should it be) an event promoter?" These are good questions to ask. I'm glad that those in power are asking them. I will be interested to hear their answers in the coming months.
Again, I invite you to submit your impressions in the comments section. I will respond as frequently as possible.

  1. Nice to read you had a good time. The race as presented by ABC was maybe a four out of ten to this viewer.

Point one, if anyone can substantiate this 4.0 ratings number, please do:
    http://twitter.com/AndyHallESPN/status/15122013055

Point two, I'd be interested to hear more about the sources for this comment:

"There are rumors of a possible team owners' revolt if Delta Wing is not selected to be the next generation of Indy car."

That possibility, as well as the Dallara's pre-determined selection, were conclusions I came to last January. However, the effect of the public reaction to the Delta gave rise to some doubts. Penske's puclic comments also seemed to "cool the jets" of the Delta movement.

So what did you hear RP, and who did you hear it from?

    Andy

  2. Interesting thoughts RP......Now, where and when will we hear about "Delta Wing"? I can't see how this turd is going to spark interest in this series. It is just another "spec" formula and it too will grow stale fast! I like to hear your thoughts and impressions as time is running out on this series and possibly the "500" if they don't get more teams, drivers, and high quality stories for the 500. I am looking forward to the latest on Dan Weldon's teeth since I heard again about "Hulio's" tax problems! If thats all they have to offer it's time to change the channel for good as other racing series offer a lot more than this! You can't sell a pig even if you put "new" lipstick on it !!!

  3. Here are my thoughts:

    1. Push-to-Pass is stupid and adds NOTHING. Put this Chump Car/Tony Cotman crap back in the storage bin where it belongs.

    2. TV ratings continue to drop. Worst overnights EVER (which broke last year's record low level). I guess "the buzz" that the Indy Car shills were spouting about didn't resonate with the rest of America.

    3. The race was not good. Too many bonehead mistakes from many of the same bonehead drivers (who make mistakes all year long). Mario Moraes and EJ Viso are jokes, who should go back to whatever low level F1 series they came from. Saavedra had no business in that race (stick to Indy Lights, son). These guys can't restart a race to save their lives. Most don't know how to pass a car and almost all of them are much better "blockers" then they are "racers". Firestone continues to bring tires to Indy that create a 1 lane race track. And ABC has the worst race presentation ever seen with some of the most bland reporters on TV.

Truthfully, if they just showed the 30 minutes of pre-race stuff (Invocation, TAPS, Anthem, flyover, Gomer and L&G Start Your Engines) and went off the air, it might be a improvement. The race is always a letdown to what the event used to be about and what it should be about.

  4. Guys,

    Addressing your questions and comments...

    Andy,
    1. I hadn't seen a ratings number yet, but the number you found (4.0 overnight) is almost exactly what I had anticipated because it follows the recent trajectory perfectly. I haven't seen the ABC telecast, but I'm perfectly willing to accept that it probably sucked, as it frequently does.

    2. The owners' revolt info came from the owner of a small team and the manager of a powerful team. The latter was admittedly second-hand, but I got it from three different sources who have all been very reliable in the past.

Regarding your conclusions of last January, I can tell you that some of the teams completely agree with you. And they're not at all happy about it. I would have to betray more than one confidence in order to identify my sources. I'm not going to do that for obvious reasons.

But I promise that I will do my best to stay true to what I'm told and to not claim to have insider info if I do not in fact have insider info.

At least one team owner believes that the fix is in for Dallara and a new Honda V6. The Delta Wing guys pointed out to a fried that theirs is the only design that does not assume a V6. DW is pulling for a 4-cylinder turbo but will adapt to a V6 if need be.

I can also tell you that at least one team owner agrees with my assessment of Honda, namely that it is a lousy partner for the league. Interestingly, some are also a bit down on Firestone, albeit less so than with Honda.

    Oldwrench,

Apparently, the fan surveys have indicated that you are correct. Whenever the league has asked for fans' opinions, it has been inundated with requests for innovation and variety.

Unfortunately, management seems convinced that having innovation and variety is economically impossible. In that regard, Delta Wing's "open source" model is likely the best one that is presently on the table. Is it good enough? I will admit that I don't know enough about it to give an answer.

Is time running out on the series? Some believe that it is. Everyone seems to agree that time is running out on the series if it cannot be self-sustaining from a financing perspective. Unfortunately, that is why it is hastily signing deals with government backstops. Barber and Baltimore are the short-term future, it would seem.

    Mr. White,

    1. Greg Beck basically admitted that push-to-pass with the present engines is no big deal. He told a live radio audience in Indy that the real benefit will come if and when turbos are reintroduced to IndyCar racing.

    2. What about the present line-up of drivers - The Product - is designed to appeal to an American television audience? Most of the competitors are financiers. This is not a product that has been designed to attract an audience of any kind.

    3. Moraes, Viso and Saavedra are financiers first and drivers second. If not for their respective checks, then they would not be in competition. From my vantage point, Viso looked like a wreck waiting to happen all afternoon. But we must remember that he's not there to compete; not really. He's there to finance KV Racing Technology.

Keep writing. I enjoy the give-and-take.

    Best Regards,

    Roggespierre

  5. As to the race, I concur, it was good, not great. Having watched the entire show on ABC, someone needs to tell ABC/ESPN to rearrange the booth. Marty Reid is consistently bad, Scott Goodyear is consistently bland, and Brent Mussberger, as (fill in the blank here)has a wonderful voice, but his "You're looking live..." intro to almost everything has been worn out since the old days when he worked with Phyllis, Irv, and Jimmy the Greek.

Kudos to the Versus crew which almost always outshines their competition.

Now, as to the future. What would be the harm with having an open enough series of specs to allow multiple chassis designs? Some may choose Swift, Dallara, or even Delta Wing, but if you define the series as a "one trick pony" again, you've defeated the purpose of a new formula altogether. Another "spec" series is NOT what is needed.

I think "push to pass" is okay for road courses, but only when they bring back turbos will you get the speed, excitement and passing.

Finally, I believe the Indy 500 can stand on its own. Care needs to be taken in building a series around the "Crown Jewel." This is not the same era as the 80's or 90's. There is way more stuff competing for the entertainment dollar, and the TV ratings point. I worry about how deep the "sisters" involvement in the IICS will be. I am concerned about their committment level for the series as a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  6. "I believe the Indy 500 can stand on its own. Care needs to be taken in building a series around the 'Crown Jewel.'"

If it can't stand on its own, as it has historically, there's no point, it's over. That said, IMHO the IRL is running bass-akwards, essentially hanging the 500 onto a series.

I'm beginning to conclude that a Memorial Day weekend date is untenable, unless it's run under the lights. IMS has no lights, and none are planned as there is a neighborhood respecting self-imposed ban on after dark racing there. Yeah, there's tradition, but maybe a move to later Saturday afternoon will breathe life into the event.

    ReplyDelete
  7. SkipInSC,

Thank you for contributing. The more, the better.

    Rocketman53,

I still believe that Memorial Day Weekend is perfect. People still watch TV; the problem is that fewer of them watch the Indy 500 on TV. What's the Indy 500's TV viewership Beta with regards to the rest of the IndyCar races? My guess is that it's pretty darn close to 1.0 - right in line.

    The product is the problem.

  8. What? Viso is a talented young driver- he was making the best out of a bad car. He would've won St. Pete if not for his faulty gearbox. Lumping him in with the ride-buyers is a mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  9. PaulTracy15,

Viso is competitive on street circuits. He was awful at Indy. If his car was that bad, then he should have parked it. The last time I saw a driver jerk his car out of the groove at the exit of a turn that often, it was Arie Junior.

That Viso is a ride buyer is not in dispute. If not for Hugo Chavez's PDVSA - not even a retailer, after all - then Viso would not have been "hired" to drive.

His primary job is to finance operations at KV. Anything more that he might accomplish is a bonus.

Thank you for contributing - it's okay to disagree here. I hope that we hear from you again.

    Best Regards,

    Roggespierre

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm not really disagreeing with you- and the PDVSA sponsorship really bugs me as well. I guess my point is, that despite that status, the kid can drive, and if he gets better on the ovals he'll do OK in the series.

Of course, I think it's a damn shame Oriol Servia doesn't have a ride and Saaverdra does-but I digress.

Having a brother who works in the ratings business (mainly radio), I often hear stories of how massively flawed the entire system is. I wonder how much the ratings are affected by DVR's.

    ReplyDelete
  11. PaulTracy15,

Oh, believe me, the ratings system is fundamentally flawed. I worked in television for ten years.

    Here are a few hints.

    1. You're much more likely to be invited to become a Nielsen household if you live within 1/2 mile of an Interstate exit.

    2. TV stations can actually buy "hot zips" from Nielsen. These are ZIP codes that Nielsen knows are over-represented in its samples. Yes, they're actually available for sale!

    3. Minorities and the poor tend to be drastically over-represented, despite what Al Sharpton might say. Why? There are many theories. The one that I believe is that people who think they have something to lose are much less likely to be enticed by Nielsen's stipend. Poor people also tend to want their voices to be heard; therefore, they like knowing that their viewership habits count. Ever wonder why every man-on-the-street interviewee you see on TV tends not to be a Mensa member? It's because that's who we were able to get to say yes to an interview.

So, yes, the system is very, very flawed.

However, Nielsen absolutely is the data point upon which national advertisers (sponsors) base their purchase decisions. That isn't going to change.

Part of succeeding in any business is identifying profit levers and capitalizing on them. Increasing Nielsen ratings should be Randy Bernard's Jobs 1, 2 and 3.
